McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for June 2016
McLean, Va.—The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in June. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District One A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. Unless otherwise indicated, all activities will be held at the Center, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.
The Old Firehouse Friday Field Trips
Friday, June 3, 3:30-10 p.m.
The Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Road, McLean VA 22101
Teens who sign up to participate in this trip to Medieval Times will witness jousting and see majestic creatures while enjoying a meal fit for a king or queen.
Concerts @ The Alden
Young Soloists Recital
Sunday, June 5, 3 p.m.
Concerts are free and open to the public; tickets are not required. This free classical music series, sponsored by The Alden and the Music Friends of Fairfax County Public Library, is now in its 41st season. This Young Soloists Recital showcases the talents of local school-age musicians: Joanna Cheng, 11, Karina Wugang, 13, Sophia Wugang, 16, Emily Ye, 14 and Eric Lin, 15.
Classics of the Silent Screen
Buster Keaton’s “The Cameraman” (1928)
Tuesday, June 7, 7:30 p.m.
$12/$8 MCC district residents
How can you go wrong with the comedy genius of Buster Keaton? Keaton gets himself into ridiculous situations in an attempt to win over a girl, and his hijinks are so timeless that “The Cameraman” has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100 percent. Hosted by film historian Bruce Lawton with live musical accompaniment by composer Ben Model.
The Old Firehouse Summer Kick-Off Party
Friday, June 10, 7-9 p.m.
The Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Road, McLean VA 22101. A disc jockey keeps the fun alive with great music while the game room is open for ping-pong, pool and other arcade games. This event will be supervised by Old Firehouse staff members. Parents/guardians (age 18 or older) must come into the center to pick up their children by 9 p.m.

“Gut Churn” from Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad
Saturday, June 11, 8 p.m.
$30/$15 MCC district residents
What does it mean to “innovate?” This was a question Radiolab host Jad Abumrad was frequently asked after being awarded a MacArthur “Genius Grant” in 2011. This multimedia exploration, on one level, is the personal story of how Jad invented a new aesthetic. On another, it is a clinic in the art of storytelling. On a third and more profound level, it is the result of a three-year investigation into the science, philosophy and art of uncertainty, which all began with the two words that are the title of this talk. “Gut Churn.”

Morgan Taylor’s “Gustafer Yellowgold’s Show”

For ages 4+. Gustafer Yellowgold is a friendly fellow who came from the Sun and landed in the Minnesota woods. “Gustafer Yellowgold’s Show” is a multi-media performance of live music, animated illustrations and storytelling.

Insider Knowledge Series “Jazz Masters with John Eaton”

Jazz pianist, musicologist and humorist John Eaton brings his popular continuing education program to The Alden. “Jazz Masters with John Eaton” is an entertaining and insightful afternoon that combines Eaton’s peerless knowledge of the Great American Songbook, hilarious commentary and elegant, ultra-tasteful renditions of jazz standards, both popular and obscure.
Take a Day Away “Kinky Boots” at the Kennedy Center

“Kinky Boots” won the 2013 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Choreography. Featuring music and lyrics by Cindi Lauper, the musical is taken from a 2005 film by the same name and is the true story of a man named Charlie Price who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with a cabaret performer who is also a drag queen and together they save the business with a line of high-heeled boots.
