McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for April 2016

 

McLean, Va.—The McLean Community Center offers the following activities in April. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District One A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. Unless otherwise indicated, all activities will be held at the Center, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

 

The Old Firehouse

Family Events Family Movie Night

Friday, Apr. 1, 7–9:30 p.m.

$3 per person

The Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va. 22101 Gather the whole family and bring your blankets, pillows, and camp chairs for The Old Firehouse’s indoor picnic style movie night. Participants will enjoy unlimited free popcorn while watching the movie “Inside Out” on a huge projection screen.

U.S. Navy Commodores

Saturday, Apr. 2, 8 p.m.

Free. No reservations required.

 

Kick off National Jazz Month with some of the best jazz musicians in the land. The Commodores have been bringing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for over 40 years, and now McLean gets its chance.

Bazooka Ball Sports

Shoot and score with the Old Firehouse as we travel to Bazooka Ball Sports! Bazooka Ball offers two less intense versions of paintball; using foam balls and soft rubber balls. Both are played in a glow-in-the-dark arena with high impact sensor vests, that feature real time in-game electronic scoring and sound effects. A signed waiver is required by Bazooka Ball Sports. Dinner will be provided. Bring additional money for extra snacks as desired.

A disc jockey keeps the fun alive with great music while the game room is open for ping-pong, pool and other arcade games. The event will be supervised by Old Firehouse staffers. A parent or guardian (age 18 or older) must pick-up his or her child by 9 p.m.

 

Spring Community Garage Sale

Saturday, Apr. 16, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Free admission

1420 Beverly Road, McLean Va. (Intersection of Beverly Rd. and Ingleside Ave.)

 

Vendor spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $45. No spaces will be sold on the day of the sale. Residents selling used household items are welcome. Limited commercial vendors or flea market dealers are also welcome. Advanced registration is required.

“Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” (T.M.L.M.T.B.G.B.)

With its ever-changing “menu” of plays, “Too Much Light…” is an attempt to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. The Neos aim to create an unreproducible, living newspaper of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and the experimental. From silly to surreal, tender to titillating, T.M.L.M.T.B.G.B. is theatre for people who want to be part of the action, love a rush of adrenaline, take a little of everything from the buffet and are, well… a little strange. Do you dare to be Neo?

Concerts at the Alden: Young Soloists Recital

This free classical music series, now in its 41st season, features professional musicians who have won international recognition for their artistry. The series also includes three Young Soloists Recitals that showcase the talents of local school-age musicians. Cosponsored by the Music Friends of the Fairfax County Public Library and The Alden.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s

“Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny”

Saturday, Apr. 23, 2 p.m.

$15/$10 MCC district residents

 

For ages 4+. “Goodnight Moon” is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while “The Runaway Bunny” is a pretend tale of leaving home that evokes reassuring responses from a loving mum. Both tales feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms of bunny banter and dream-like imagery never fail to infuse young readers with a reassuring sense of security. Mermaid’s staged adaptation will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted several generations.

Insider Knowledge Series “Jazz Masters with John Eaton: The Music of Hoagy Carmichael”

Saturday, Apr. 30, 1 p.m.

$12/$5 MCC district residents

 

Jazz pianist, musicologist and humourist, John Eaton brings his popular continuing education program to The Alden. “Jazz Masters with John Eaton” is an entertaining and insightful afternoon that combines Eaton’s peerless knowledge of the Great American Songbook, hilarious commentary and elegant, ultra-tasteful renditions of jazz standards, both popular and obscure.
