McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for March 2017

McLean, Va.The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in March. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District One A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. Unless otherwise indicated, all activities will be held at the Center, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.



Old Firehouse Family Movie Night
“The Secret Life of Pets”
Friday, March 3, 7-9 p.m.
$3 per person. Pre-registration is recommended.
The Old Firehouse, 1440 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, Va. 22101

Gather the whole family and bring your blankets, pillows and camp chairs for our indoor, picnic-style family movie night. Participants will enjoy unlimited free popcorn with the movie, which will be shown on a huge projection screen.

Dinner & A Movie

The Village at Leesburg is providing Old Firehouse participants an enjoyable evening of dining and entertainment. Dinner at a local restaurant will be followed by “Kong: Skull Island” in the unique, D-Box Motion Seats at Cobb Theaters.


An Alden Theatre Production
“The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales”
Sat-Sun, March 11-12 and 18-19, 3 p.m.
$15/$10 MCC district residents

Though the characters may be familiar, each of your favorite storybook fables is uproariously derailed in this adaptation of the quintessential children's book of fractured fairy tales. Fun music and witty narration accompany the likes of ineloquent giants, sassy barnyard animals, colossal cow pies and enough stinky cheese to go around. Performed by talented McLean youth.

Spring is just around the corner and the McLean Community Center is offering a colorful “bouquet” of classes to greet the new season! The Center is offering more than 50 classes this spring for infants through senior adults, providing a convenient and affordable continuing education resource for area residents.

2017 Philadelphia Flower Show
Wednesday, March 15, 6:45 a.m.-8 p.m.
$136 per person/$131 MCC district residents

The theme of the 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show is “Holland” but there will be much more than just tulips on display! This is the world's oldest and largest indoor flower show and the longest running show in North America. The Philadelphia Horticultural Society has promised creative Dutch landscapes, previewing Holland's top landscape architects as well as Holland's history, art and culture.

Governing Board Election
Candidate Petitions Are Due
Friday, March 17, 5 p.m.

The filing deadline for the McLean Community Center’s 2017-2018 Governing Board Elections is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Residents of Dranesville Small Tax District 1A who are interested in running for a seat on the board can still enter the race. The Board sets policy and provides general oversight for MCC facilities, which include the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and The Old Firehouse on Chain Bridge Rd.

The Old Firehouse hosts parties for 5th and 6th graders. These always sold-out, themed and decorated 5th and 6th grader parties include music, dancing, games, free catered food, videos and various attractions.


MCC Governing Board
Public Hearings on FY 2019 Programs
Wednesday, March 22, 7:30 p.m.
All board meetings are open to the public.

McLean Community Center’s 11-member Governing Board is inviting residents of the Center’s special tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, to share their thoughts on Center programs and services at a Public Hearing on FY 2019 Programs to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22. The regular monthly meeting of the Governing Board will follow the hearing.


Old Firehouse School Break Trips
Atomic Trampoline & Movie
Friday, March 24, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Atomic Trampoline Fun Center has plenty of room for meeting your high-adrenaline needs with over 40 interconnecting trampolines and foam pits. Afterwards, relax at the movies with a choice of a PG or PG-13 blockbuster. Admission to Atomic Trampoline, movie tickets and lunch are included.


Concerts @ The Alden
Young Soloist Recital
Sunday, March 26, 3 p.m.

Free admission; tickets are not required.

This free classical music series, now in its 41st season, features professional musicians who have won international recognition for their artistry. The series also includes Young Soloists Recitals that showcase the talents of local school-age musicians. Cosponsored by the Music Friends of the Fairfax County Public Library and The Alden.

James C. Macdonald Scholarship Final Competition
Wednesday, March 29, 8 p.m.

Free admission

Young performing artists in dance, theater and vocal and instrumental music will perform on The Alden stage in the final phase of this scholarship competition. First place winners in each of the four categories receive $1,200; second place winners receive $800; and third place winners receive $400.


Family Fun Bingo
Friday, March 31, 7-9 p.m.
$10/$5 MCC district residents.

Vertical, horizontal, diagonal or picture frame—whatever your strategy, join us for this family fun-filled evening of bingo! Win great kid-friendly prizes, play guessing games, enjoy light refreshments and more. It’s a great way for families to spend quality time together. Players will enjoy free popcorn and winners will take their pick of prizes!
