History of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O Canal)
Construction of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal began in 1828 with President John Quincy Adams turning over the first spade full of dirt. The canal runs a distance of 184.5 miles. Today, the canal and its adjoining towpath is a national park where hikers, bikers and campers can historically journey along the Potomac River.
