McLean Community Center Recognizes Longtime Volunteer Thamir Al’Hashimi with Its 2016 Outstanding Volunteer Service Award

McLean, Va.Thamir Al’Hashimi, a longtime community leader and volunteer, has been awarded the McLean Community Centers’ (MCC) top honor for volunteers, the 2016 H. Gordon Randall Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. The award was presented at the Center’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, March 18. The center, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave., is under renovation. Temporary administrative offices are located at 6631 Old Dominion Dr.

In presenting the award, MCC Executive Director George Sachs said, “For years, Mr. Al’Hashimi has demonstrated his commitment and compassion as an ambassador to the McLean community and the McLean Community Center through a variety of actions.”

For more than 20 years, Al’Hashimi has been a faithful board member of the Friends of McLean Community Center, a nonprofit fundraising organization that supports the Center. Over the years, he has helped the Friends raise funds for several improvement projects, including mounting historical photos in some Center meeting rooms, commissioning a painting to honor Robert “Bob” Alden, for whom The Alden Theatre is named and purchasing a free-standing registration kiosk for patrons. The recipient of the Friends of MCC’s 2010 “Friend in Deed” award, he has also volunteered to work at many Center-sponsored special events—from manning the Friends booth at McLean Day to helping with crowd control at the Center’s annual 4
th of July Fireworks Celebration.

“I am a community service-oriented individual,” said Al’Hashimi, who has been a member of the Rotary Club since 1978, both in McLean and in California, where he lived prior to moving here. He also serves on the board of the Evermay Community Association and is a member of the McLean Chamber of Commerce.
