Abingdon’s Barter Players Bring Two Favorite Tales to Life in January
McLean, Va.—The Alden in McLean is taking its “show on the road” in January, offering two children’s theater productions by the Abingdon-based Barter Players at Churchill Road Elementary School on Saturday, Jan. 6. “Aesop’s Fables” by Catherine Bush with music by Ben Mackel will be presented at 11 a.m. and “The Call of the Wild,” adapted from Jack London’s book by Catherine Bush, will be presented at 3 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 per show, $10 for MCC tax district residents. Churchill Road Elementary School is located at 7100 Churchill Rd.
The Alden Theatre’s permanent home, the McLean Community Center, is currently closed for renovation.
Aesop is one of the most beloved storytellers of all time, able to weave fantastic tales with timeless lessons of truth. Audience members can join Aesop and his friends in this exciting musical adventure and experience fables such as “Androcles and the Lion,” “The Oak and the Reed,” “The Fox Without a Tail,” “The Beast in Love,” “The Tortoise and The Hare” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” brought to life as only the Barter Players can. This production is suitable for children ages 4 and older.
In the gripping tale, “The Call of the Wild,” a heroic dog named Buck is kidnapped from his master’s home and forced to serve as a sled dog in the Alaskan Gold Rush. In his struggle to survive, he quickly learns the “law of club and fang” while giving his unswerving loyalty to the man who saves his life. In the end, Buck must choose between living in a man’s world and answering the call of the wild. This show is one of the most acclaimed productions in Barter Player history and is suitable for children ages 12 or older.
