MCC is open to the public; however, the activities and programs being offered are limited. The Old Firehouse Center will remain closed. If you do visit the center, please wear a mask and honor social distancing recommendations.

The 2020 James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition

Annually, the McLean Community Center recognizes the hard work and talent of young performing artists through the James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition. Following a preliminary round and final round of competition, prizes (1st - $1,200; 2nd - $800, and 3rd - $400) are awarded in each of four categories: dance, theater, instrumental music and vocal music.

Beginning in 2020, the 1st place Instrumental Award will be named in honor of Anita Lamkin, a longtime friend of young musicians and supporter of music performances in McLean.


Who can apply: High school students who reside or attend school in the MCC tax district (Small District One A-Dranesville) are eligible to apply.

  • Students may enter in more than one category, but must submit an application form for each.
  • A nonrefundable, $20 fee is required for each application form submitted.
  • Fee may be paid via check using the check payment form or credit card using the links below.

Application Deadline: Friday, January 24
Preliminary Round:
Week of February 3
Final Competition:
Wednesday, March 18, 8 p.m.
