McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for April 2024

McLean, Va. The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in April 2024. Please check the center’s website, mcleancenter.org, for up-to-date information. Residents of the center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

Old Firehouse Center Teacher Workday Trip
Uptown Alley & Indoor Trampoline
Monday, April 1, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
$70/$60 MCC district residents
Jump all day and bowl a strike. The Old Firehouse will be going to Uptown Alley to hit the lanes and then have a bouncing session at a local indoor trampoline park. Admission to both activities and lunch is included in the fee. All participants must have an additional waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Bring additional funds to purchase snacks and/or arcade games as desired.

K1 Speed/Top Golf
Tuesday, April 2, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
$100/$90 MCC district residents
Experience a thrill like no other while driving an electric, pro-style go kart at indoor racing, then perfect your swing. Races, admission and lunch are included in the fee. All participants must have an additional waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Bring additional funds as desired.

Wednesday, April 10, 6:30 p.m.
Iran and France; Directed Asghar Farhadi. Shown in Farsi with English subtitles. Cannes and Oscar winner. From the director of “A Separation,” a married couple perform in Arthur Miller's 1949 play “Death of a Salesman” on stage. When the wife is assaulted, her husband attempts to determine the identity of the attacker, while she struggles to cope with post-traumatic stress. Rated PG-13

Come enjoy a night of laughs on us! (the) Unruly Improv is The Alden’s professional teen improv company dedicated to bringing comedic performances to the community. UTP won 1st place at Improvicon of Northern Virginia in both 2022 and 2023—and were the only teen group competing!

The Borisevich Duo, featuring pianist Margarita Loukachkina and violinist Nikita Borisevich, is an internationally acclaimed violin and piano duet, frequently performing across the United States and Europe.

Led by the acclaimed Honolulu Theatre for Youth, this gentle introduction to the basics of hula will teach traditional gestures and body movements as well as the history and cultural context of this beautiful Hawaiian art form. All movement levels are welcome!

Lightwire Theater: “The Ugly Duckling”
Friday, April 12, 6 p.m.
$15/$12 seniors/$10 MCC district residents
Lightwire Theater’s production takes Aesop’s classic fable about acceptance and makes it electric! Their unique brand of electromagnetic storytelling uses only LED wire, larger than life puppets and a dramatic score to convey deep meaning and theatrical excitement. In 2012, Lightwire was a semi-finalist on “America’s Got Talent!”

Reduc, Reuse, Recycle
McLean Earth Day – Act Locally
Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m.– noon
Strictly MCC district residents only.
Free, registration is required
This outdoor environmental action event is designed to provide MCC district residents with an opportunity to create a healthier planet. Shred, reuse, recycle, replenish and make McLean an even better place by acting locally. The event includes document shredding (up to five file boxes–no clips please), bike donations, recycled art display, bulk and household item donations and more. Don’t leave without your free gifts of a tree whip and pollinator seeds!

Monthly Board Meeting
Wednesday, April 17, 6:30 p.m.
All Governing Board meetings are open to the public.
Tax district residents (Small District One A-Dranesville) who wish to speak during the “Public Comment” portion of the monthly board meeting are welcome to do so while attending the meeting, or may call the center in advance at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, to be placed on the speakers’ list.

Spring Community Parking Lot Sale
Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Free admission
Shoppers will find bargains galore at this community sale of more than 50 sellers, including a limited number of commercial venders and flea market dealers. The sale offers a wide variety of new and gently used household goods, electronics, furniture, clothes, appliances, “attic treasures” and other items suitable for every budget. Check out the Kids’ Corner, a special area of the sale where children ages 3-15 can increase their math and entrepreneurial skills while selling toys, clothes, games and other items. Poli and Pola are siblings who don’t want to go to sleep. The siblings start off playing with toys in their bedroom. Then, their imaginations take them on a surreal, dream-like journey full of surprise and joy. BRUSH Theatre of South Korea uses incredible technology and special effects to transform the set from an empty room to far away islands, roaring seas, the Egyptian desert, busy cities, dance parties and other exciting locales! Sensory Day
Saturday, April 27, 1-4 p.m.

Free for all participants; preregistration is recommended.
Challenge your senses at the Old Firehouse! This unique and fun event, supporting Autism Awareness Month, will provide ALL who attend a sensory exploration through taste, smell, sound, sight and touch. This event is free and open to ALL.
