McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for February 2025

McLean, Va. The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in February 2025. Please check the center’s website, mcleancenter.org, for up-to-date information. Residents of the center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. All activities are held at the center, located at 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, Va. 22101, unless otherwise noted.

Ars Gratia Populi
Sunday, Feb. 2, 2 p.m.
$10/$7 students and seniors/$5 MCC district residents
For all ages. Ars Gratia Populi (Latin for “art for the people’s sake”) is a vocal ensemble that explores the interplay between art music and folk music in an a cappella setting. The six unaccompanied voices of the ensemble bring purity and intricacy to everything from Renaissance madrigals to Scottish Gaelic ballads to maybe even some modern standards. A Parisian aristocrat, quadriplegic since a paragliding accident, hires a young man to be his live-in caretaker. Although very different, the two men bond and develop a close friendship. Rated: R. Runtime: 2 hours.

Family Events
Sweetheart Parent & Child Dance
Friday, Feb. 7, 7-9 p.m.
Admission: $20 per person
For all ages. Children are invited to come to MCC for a fancy “date” with their parents or guardians. Featured activities included a photo booth, a DJ playing your favorite tunes, craft projects and light refreshments. Create lasting memories by joining us! A parent or guardian must attend the event with their child/children and register individually.

The Black Opry Revue
Saturday, Feb. 8, 7 p.m.
$30/$25 students and seniors/$20 MCC district residents
For all ages. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception.  Country, blues, folk and Americana music overlap or are woven together by a proper revue of Black country artists. In true Opry style, this concert will feature a variety of Black country music artists from around the country. Featured artists: Acisse Jay, Sug Daniels, Mel Washington and Justin Golden.

“How It Feels to be Free”

Based on the book by Ruth Feldstein, this PBS documentary tells the inspiring stories of six iconic African American female entertainers – Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier. Barron Ryan, Piano

For all ages. Award-winning pianist Barron Ryan grew up in a musical household filled with the sounds of artists ranging from Mozart to Michael Jackson. In “Classic Meets Cool,” he features some of the greatest piano music ever made---groovy classical works, renditions of great jazz and pop tunes and original compositions. He combines them all into a musical adventure that’s vintage yet fresh, historical yet hip, classic yet cool.
