McLean Community Center seeks artists for two public art projects to commemorate its 50th Anniversary

McLean, Va.—McLean Community Center (MCC) is accepting qualifications from artists or artist teams for two public art projects it is commissioning in McLean. The two public art projects are part of the center’s 50th Anniversary celebration, which will take place in 2025. The first project is a mural to be created for the rear wall of the Old Firehouse Center (OFC), located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. The second project is a typographical sculpture to be placed on the rear plaza of MCC, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

OFC Mural Specifications

The selected artist/team will design, fabricate and install a permanent work of art at the Old Firehouse Center (OFC), 1440 Chain Bridge Rd., in August 2025. Artists who are invited to submit a proposal and be interviewed will receive an honorarium of $500.

The permanent mural should express civic pride, showcase the diversity of the McLean community and provide place-making for the area. The artist/team will have an opportunity to engage with community members to inform the design of the mural. MCC/OFC staff will work with the artist/team to coordinate community engagement.

Project Budget

The $30,000 artist fee includes design, community engagement, materials, site preparation, fabrication, insurance, travel, installation and a maintenance plan for the artwork.

Proposed Schedule

The application period opens on July 3, 2024, and closes on August 16, 2024 with finalists being notified in mid-September.

All interested artists should submit an application with the preliminary submission materials: a statement of interest, resume, images of past work and professional references. Applications must be submitted through the CaFÉ portal by August 16, 2024.

MCC Sculpture Specifications

The selected artist/team will design, fabricate and install a permanent work of art at 1234 Ingleside Ave. in Spring 2025. Artists invited to submit a proposal and interview will receive an honorarium of $500.

The artist/team will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and installing a permanent typographic work of art based on MCC letters/logo that will welcome residents to the Center and provide place-making for the area.
The site-specific, impactful design will be based upon the MCC letters/logo. The design should increase the visibility and identity of the MCC. The art should be recognizable from a distance with a strong day and nighttime presence. It should be engaging from all angles/directions and include interactive elements, such as seating, while ensuring safety.

Project Budget

The $80,000 artist fee includes design, materials, fabrication, insurance, travel, packing, shipping, installation and a maintenance plan for the artwork.
