McLean Community Center Calendar of Events for October 2023

McLean, Va. The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in October 2023. Please check the center’s website, mcleancenter.org, for up-to-date information. Residents of the center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

Foreign Language Film
Thursday, Oct. 5, 1 p.m.
Free admission.
The Alden’s foreign language movie series is curated by Performing Arts Director Sarah Schallern Treff, with more than a little help from our audience members! The series has a few surprises thrown in. The schedule is subject to change.

Join the Fun Run!
McLean 5k
Saturday, Oct. 7, 8 a.m.
Registration, Package Pick Up, Warmup begins at 7 a.m.; Race begins at 8 a.m.
McLean Square Shopping Center, 6631 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Va. 22101
Hosted by the McLean Community Center with the support of sponsors, Century 21 New Millennium and the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce, the race features a USATF-certified course through the heart of McLean and is designed to appeal to runners of all abilities. The proceeds of the run benefit the McLean Community Foundation. Register at mclean5k.com

MCC Youth Events
Touch-A-Truck
Monday, Oct 9, 10 a.m.-Noon

Free Admission. Registration required for Sensory Friendly Experience at 9:30 a.m. only.
New this year! Families can now come from 9:30-10 a.m. to see and touch the trucks without all the noise. Join us during the Fairfax County Public Schools’ holiday for this FREE event that gives kids and families the chance to see, touch and explore some of their favorite vehicles.

Old Firehouse Friday Night Activities
Haunted Trip
Friday, Oct. 13, 4:30-11 p.m.
$60/$50 OFC Members
Trip departs and returns to OFC, 1440 Chain Bridge Rd.
We invite the brave-hearted to join the Old Firehouse on its haunted journey searching for ghosts, zombies and whatever creepy creatures might appear in the night. A signed waiver is required for participation. Admission and dinner are included in the fee. Participants can bring additional money for snacks and souvenirs as desired.

New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players: “The Pirates of Penzance”
In one act with a second act of G&S favorites
Friday, Oct. 13, 7 p.m.
$20/$17 students and seniors/$15 MCC district residents
For all ages. Everyone has pretended to be a pirate at some point! Set sail with this classic, abbreviated, musical comedy and a cabaret of favorites from the G&S canon.

McLean Pet Fest
Sunday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m-4 p.m.
McLean Central Park, 1468 Dolley Madison Blvd.
Free Admission
Have fun at the park and bring your furry friends (leashed, please)! Enjoy free music, Fido’s Bone Bar, a photo booth, pet tricks, gourmet food trucks, giveaways and demonstration shows. Find valuable pet-related resources including pet rescue, adoption, pet sitters, groomers and trainers. Costumes are welcome for the Pet Parade at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m.
$30/$25 students and seniors/$20 MCC district residents
For all ages. Connect to the songs. Connect to the stories behind them. Connect with the songwriters who wrote them. Get a glimpse into the life of a Nashville songwriter and the songs that you’ve heard on the radio for years.

MCC Governing Board
Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, Oct. 25, 6:30 p.m.
All Governing Board meetings are open to the public.
Tax district residents (Small District 1A-Dranesville) who wish to speak during the “Citizen Comment” portion of the meeting are asked to call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, to be placed on the agenda.

Old Firehouse Family Events
Festival of Frights and Trunk or Treat
Saturday, October 28, 5-10 p.m.
Free for all participants. Preregistration is required.
Calling all families of ghouls and goblins! Come join the Old Firehouse in your best Halloween costumes for a night of live music, games, food, contests and tons of candy! Families who wish to volunteer themselves and their vehicles for Trunk or Treat should submit an email request to oldfirehouse@mcleancenter.org. Please include your name and your trunk theme. Volunteer hours are 4-8:30 p.m. Each family will receive candy to distribute to the trunk or treaters.

Djembe Drumming Family Workshop
Featuring Master Artist Kofi Dennis
Friday, Oct. 27, 7 p.m.
$15/$12 students and seniors/$10 MCC district residents
For all ages. No experience necessary. Dennis will teach participants basic drumming skills and the workshop will end with a group drum circle. Families with children (age 8+) can participate together. Drums will be provided for use. A great way to de-stress from a busy week!
